Co-opt and Control or Remove

Ian Johnson, writing in Foreign Affairs, defined the direction of Chinese government policy to the church in China in a way that should be helpful to all those who pray for China’s church. He essentially made three points.

Arrests in China

On December 9th 2018, Chinese security officials shut down Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, arresting Pastor Wang Yi and his wife Jiang Rong, as well as several elders and 100 church members. Some have since been released, but the pastor and elders have not been freed (at the time of writing).

China and the Bible, The Word of God

Paul, writing in 2 Timothy 4:1-2, makes a very interesting emphasis to his young team member, Timothy - especially since “this is the final chapter of Paul’s final letter.” Paul’s emphasis is on the Bible, the Word of God.

Recently two high profile international events took place which created two very different responses from other nations. These responses provide an interesting glimpse into China’s unique status in the world today.

China And The Roman Catholic Church

On September 22nd 2018 the Vatican announced that it had reached a provisional agreement with the Chinese government concerning the relationship between the Catholic church and the Chinese state.
