A Word from the Word

The Place of Blessing

Psalm 133:1–3

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard, coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, coming down upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing – life forevermore.     NASB

Note that closing phrase, “There the Lord commanded the blessing.” It’s always been my ambition as a believer to live in the place where the Lord commands the blessing. Because if the Lord commands the blessing, there is no power in the universe that can withstand or withhold the blessing.

So many times we see God’s people cry out to God for the blessing, praying for the blessing, seeking the blessing. I understand that, but to me it’s so much higher to live in the place where God has commanded the blessing. What is that place? It’s the place of unity, where brethren dwell together in unity, there the Lord has commanded the blessing, even life forevermore.

Life flows out of unity and unity, the psalmist says; it is like the oil that was poured on the head of Aaron the High Priest. It flowed from the top of his head down to his beard and down to the collar of his robes. There’s another deep principle: unity flows from the head downwards. It does not come from the feet upwards. The unity of God's people begins with the unity of the leaders of God’s people. When the leaders of God’s people are united in spirit, then the anointing oil flows down over the remainder of the body of Christ and in that place of unity God commands the blessing. We do not have to run after it, we do not have to strive after it; we just have to meet the conditions.
