A Word from the Word

True Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13–15

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.     NIV

Those words have always been very meaningful for me. In a way, they sum up my life experience. As a boy, I was always interested in wisdom. In my teens I became interested in philosophy. Later I became a student, a research student, and finally a professor of philosophy. I was pursuing wisdom through my life, but it was a wisdom that gave no real reward or return. It was a wisdom without fruit.

And then in His mercy, God miraculously revealed Himself to me. He opened up the pages of the Bible to me. He gave me the gift of the Holy Spirit to interpret the Scripture and there I found the source of true wisdom. A wisdom that yields fruit, a wisdom that yields blessing beyond our power to calculate or compute and I want to give my personal testimony to you as you listen to these words.

Truly, “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom.” She is more profitable than silver, she is more precious than rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with her. This is the pearl of great price. The one thing that’s worth more than all of the other things in life. It’s the finding of the wisdom of God revealed in Scripture by the Holy Spirit.
